Spring Intern: Austin
My name is Austin Moncivaez and I am a senior at MTSU and the spring semester’s intern at Barker & Christol.
I decided to pursue advertising when I was forced to choose a major and Professional Table Tennis Player was nowhere on the list. The dynamic and fast-paced nature of the industry quickly drew me in though, and I now find myself critiquing billboards and reading Ad Age articles in my spare time. I think one of the main reasons advertising appeals to me is because it is all about your audience’s perception. In many areas of business, it’s about numbers, data, and rules. But with advertising, it’s up to you. You know what you are trying to convince your target market of, and it is up to you to decide how to do it.
In contrast to most of my generation, I prefer the world of print ads to video or multimedia. I think there is so much to be said about ads that can evoke emotion or cause viewers to take action, using only an image and tagline. I love the challenge of engaging a viewer without the aid of music or video— the feeling of satisfaction that accompanies the moment when you find that perfect combination of words to convey your message. The ad has to be striking enough to grab your reader’s attention, while at the same time possess the content to persuade them to buy. You have mere seconds to convince them. You get one shot. My inspiration comes from ads from Nike and Apple to name a few. I guess you could say I am inspired by effective simplicity. The ability to communicate a crucial message in a concise manner is a highly sought after skill., and there is no denying that these guys do it best.
I’m extremely excited to be a member of the team here at Barker & Christol. I’ve quickly found that there is no better group to be learning from, and already in my first two weeks this group of ad wiz’s has taught me more about the finer points of the advertising industry, and Star Wars trivia, than school ever has. It’s truly an honor to work with these guys, and I can’t wait to see what opportunities my time here presents me. Growing up as an athlete, I have a true passion for sports and all athletic endeavors. After graduating I hope to land a job in sports advertising. My strengths lie in creative strategy and copywriting, and I would love to be able to use both of those tools to make an impact in a professional sports organization.
