We’ve got some really creative minds at Barker & Christol. Like, award-winning, degree-holding, grade A creative brains. But even the best of the best get in a rut. So what do our folks do when their creative juices run dry? We asked and they spilled.

  1. Nap.
    1. 20 minutes a day keeps the doctor away, right?
  2. Scroll through Pinterest
    1. Sometimes all you need is a little social perusing to get you inspired.
  3. Take a walk.
    1. Fresh air is good for the body and the mind. Snap a few pictures of the world around you while you’re at it.
  4. Organize your desk.
    1. A clean slate is good for you. Focus on the one task of cleaning your desk and then move on to the next task.
  5. Old Fashioned: Pen & Paper
    1. Maybe take the drink along too, but just sit down and start drawing or writing like you did in your Middle School journal.
  6. Podcast
    1. Find an encouraging industry genius and get motivated to become greater.
  7. Check out the competition
    1. Nothing pushes you to work harder like seeing that your arch nemesis did something really cool. Being cooler than your competition is always a good goal.
  8. Present your creative situation to a colleague and get their perspective.
    1. A fresh take is always helpful and often motivating. Especially when you work with intelligent & really cool people, like us.
  9. Immerse in Entertainment
    1. Entertainment media is a goldmine for inspiration and we’re surrounded by it! Make time to watch that Netflix show you’ve been putting off, dust off that old record you played on repeat, relax with popcorn and your favorite cult classic film, whatever floats your boat. Hey, this tactic always works perfectly in Hollywood, so why can’t it work in real life?
  1. Relax and take it all in.
    1. Relax and allow what’s around you everywhere to spark your creativity. Nature, people, your city, your home, your clothes, anything. There’s inspiration everywhere, you just have to be aware enough to see it.

We’ll admit it. Creativity isn’t a constant thing for us, or anyone. We all get bogged down and feel like all our creativity is a well run dry. But next time you feel like the best you got is nothing, give one of these 10 tricks a try and see what you come up with.
